Meet Elephant #1. I’ve decided its a "she" but I haven’t named her yet because its going to take me a few days to actually like her. She was my first try at a toy and it was a vintage pattern (and I mean vintage – the pattern was from a 1910-ish Good Housekeeping magazine), and she is hopelessly flawed. This probably wasn’t the best toy to start with; there are much easier patterns for stuffed toys out there. But I liked the idea of an elephant and I like vintage patterns.
She really is a mess; the fabric kept fraying so the stitches are already coming out in some places, and her ears aren’t even – ugh. I’ll probably dress her up with a bow or tutu or something, if for no other reason than to distract myself from all the goofs. Maybe I’ll have better luck next time (if there is a next time; I have to forget the pain of putting this one together first).

Oh, she’s so cute! That’s the wonderful thing about a handmade toy, they’re not perfect, kind of shabby and wonky, but thoroughly lovable. My favorite kind of softie!

I think it is fabulous. You should sell them at some little shop or something.

Well then, since you say this little gal’s full of mistakes, you must have her turned to her best side 🙂 The pieces are tiny, the curves are many (part of the reason I never made you girls doll clothes for your Cabbage Patch dolls — I left that creative stuff to your Aunt S.!) … I applaud you for getting much farther than *I* would have!
